ProvideX Unix Installation Readme

1. What is a ".taz" file extension ?
   

   Well, actually we create the files as ".tar.Z" but most of the browsers do not recognize this "combined" extension. Browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer get very upset when you have more than one period in a filename. To circumvent this we switch the extension to ".taz", which is a well known short form in the UNIX world.

   A ".tar.Z" file is a TAR Archive that has been compressed.

   So... Once you've downloaded the file, rename it:

   mv thisfile.taz to file.tar.Z

2. To install ProvideX on a Unix platform:
   

   ******************************************************************
   *  Please replace 'pv??????.taz' in the following instructions   * 
   *  with the appropriate file name downloaded.                    *
   *  In addition we have assumed the default intallation directory * 
   *  name of /pvx.                                                 *
   ******************************************************************
   

   • Copy the pv??????.taz file to /tmp
   • Enter the following commands to expand/install the software:

   umask 0
   cd /tmp
   mv pv??????.taz pv??????.tar.Z
   uncompress pv??????.tar
   mkdir /pvx
   cd /pvx
   tar xvf /tmp/pv??????.tar
   

   • This completes the installation of ProvideX.
     
     
3. If you have not previously Activated ProvideX, and you would like a "Demonstration" activation type the following:
   

   cd /pvx
   /pvx/pvxactv lib -d
   

4. To start ProvideX, type the following:
   

   cd /pvx
   /pvx/pvx
